Compression test rsults

Hi all

I am a bit diheartened with my CT, a few problems, so I thought about a recon but I wanted to know the state of the engine first, and if it was OK, just work out the issues, so I am trying to go through the process of checking all I can.

I have done a compression test:

1= 115
2= 120
3= 122
4= 120

are these OK?

also I did a oil pressure test:

just under 3 bar when quite cold on tick over
just under 3.5bar when cold and reving (2000-3000ish) no rev counter

when warm (ran 10 mins or so)

2 3/4 bar on tick over (a bit fast)
3 1/4 bar on rev (2000 - 3000 guess)

any advise on these greatly apretiated and any other test I can do to help decide to keep the engine,

many thanks

Damion

The compression should be 116-145 psi wear limit to 100 psi. Max difference between cylinders 30psi
So your compressions look good.

Hot oil pressure should be minimum 2 bar at 2000 RPM, minimum 0.45 bar at idle.
Oil pressure looks good.

Does'nt need a new engine yet.
What problems are you having?

Ditto what herb said :ok , that's pretty decent for a used CT (not knowing how old yours is)

Other checks...... are you using any oil, are you using any water?

Probably worth doing a leak down test as well if you can, will give you a better idea of the condition of the valve gear than a compression test.

Also on the compression note how many cranks it takes to give you those readings - should reach max PSI in 3 goes with about 70-80% on first "pump". An engine that gets to 120 but does it in 40 PSI increments is in a lot worse wear state than one that does 120 PSI but gets 80 on the first pump :D

PS - the comment about using water was a joke :rollin :rollin

thanks,

I counted to 10 with full throttle (not very tech i know) but can do it a agin on first turn. No major problems, megga knock for a few miles, think have narrowed it down to two dodgy tappetts. Hes slow, leaks abit of oil, a little thirsty but sounds cool ! just lost a bit of confidence, saw theam all going to cornwall in the summer and wished I took him instead of the car, would have fit in nicely on black rock sands :) Is that other test were you put air down?

many thanks

Leak down tester fills the cylinder with compressed air and the you can see how much leaks out. You can also listen for where it is leaking from, intake valve, exhaust valve, rings etc.

For your compression test, get someone else to crank the engine then watch the tester and you will see the needle jump on each compression stroke. That way you can tell roughly how much it is compressing on first stroke, second stroke etc.

HTH

thanks all,

Its going to be a little while before I can do a leak down test, I hope to do a smoke test aswell,

Damion.
