what lube?

The seel that goes around the fuel filler pipe and pushes into the tank has split and fairly rotten so when I fill up the fuel leaks all over the floor. I have ordered a new one on line and was wondering if and what lube to use when I push it in? In plumbing etc you would use washing up liquid. Because the seel may come in contact with the fuel does it mater if I use greese. oil. vas soap etc? Thanx 
Or Vaseline.After all it is petroleum jelly.
