alternator problem

Hi

my t25 1984 1.9 petrol has been running well in the year I've had it.

One my last trip away the van started fine on the morning of the trip home. After stopping for 3 mins the van wouldn't turn, just dead. I took a jump off my leisure battery and it started at the 3rd time. Didn't turn over first two. 10 mins later the van started cutting out every time I slowed down at lights etc, each time I jumped it off the leisure battery to start it again. It also lost power, spluttered and back fired when it did run. Thankfully I got home after quite a few cut outs and jumps from leisure batt.

Now I had noticed of late that around this time the batt light had not been coming on with ignition as it used to do, while the oil light still came on for a few secs then went off after start up like the battery light used to.

Mechanic checked current across battery and deemed faulty alternator. I got one but the battery light still does not come on with ignition. I am scared to take it out now as I think a problem remains. My dad earthed the small green wire that goes into the back of the alternator (from the starter) and hey presto the battery light comes on......

Advice on next step much appreciated
