only thing im worried about is the big whole

The vac hoses look like they need sorting out. Particularly the one that tees off the air box into fresh air. Is it blanked off with a dust cap?

You shouldn't be able to see the outside world from the engine bay. I'm pretty sure the bit to the left of your coil should be completely boxed in.

This. The rigid plastic pipe hose that's going nowhere should be on the stub on the distributor vacuum unit.

Perhaps the advance/retard unit is duff, hence being disconnected and blanked off.

do ou have pictures of this unit or where it can be found?

im not 100% sure what the vac lines do any where i can read about them?

Retards the ignition at idle to improve emissions I think.
