I have just bought an oil cooler from a member here and need advice on fitting and locating it. Looking at the oil filter unit I can see two pipes ..one in one out???. Do I simply use these????...also where should it be mounted?? Its an oxford cooler never used came with 400 psi 28 bar rubber hose.

Do you mean you have bought a oil cooler radiator? If so you need to but a mocal thermostatic take off plate in 3/4unf size, this fits between filter and housing, you then need to fit the radiator in front of your main rad, you then need to buy pipes to connect the rad to the sandwich plate. The two pipes connected to the the filter housing are coolant hoses, so you do not want to connect to them.

so does a diesel, its called a oil/coolant heat exchanger
some people want extra cooling, don't hear of it much on petrols though

the oil coolant heat exchanger main form is to heat the oil from the coolant. speeding up the warming up process to get the oil up to temp.

a remote oil cooler is a wise move on a wxb with a thermostatic sandwich plate, when i had my wbx on a long motorway run or working it hard the oil temp would regularly exceed 120c,which is too high! this is would in turn directly effect the oil pressure (lowering it).

remember the thermostatic take of plate it will only open once the oil reaches a preset temperature so you wont be cooling the oil as your on the warm up stage, you will also have the advantage of the extra oil capacity with in the pipes and the cooler, in my case this was an extra one and a quarter liters, which is no bad thing.

No thanks, I put the right oil in and change it often.

I bought from mr ETA-BETA who was going to fit it to his 2.1 until it popped!... I was under the impression that 2.1 failed often due to oil overheating on the big end??? So I thought I'd prevent if poss!!!

Not only that - it'll try to keep the oil and coolant temperatures the same as each other...

It's also a lot higher than the ~90deg coolant, so the heat exchanger will cool the oil, by passing heat to the coolant, which will then be cooled by the rad & fan.

How efficiently it actually does that is another question...

'course, another good prevention measure would be to use oil which can cope with higher temperatures better, but that's not a very popular opinion with some...

Now my mind has been overloaded... Do I fit this thing or not?...if so what do I need ?? If not why on a long run pushing it along a bit does the buzzer of dooom sound and stop if I back off a bit???
