Cutting out, stalling, running rough

Engine not been idling correctly, lumpy, and now it just stalls unless the throttle is half open. The previous owner fitted a vacuum dizzy with points from an old bus, id love to go back to stock and get electronic ignition in there. I fitted one of the hot spark contactless replacement kits last year but couldnt rotate the dizzy enough to get the timing spot on (the vacuum thing on the side is pushed up against the big water hose) also the vacuum thing is also near the rear, is this 180 degrees out?
Saw "Distributor, New repro 1.9 DG (fit cap to suit year) 025905205NEW" on VW heritage, cheaper than 009 (which i wont consider) and 123, and maybe a straight stock replacement. But going back from my contact one to this would mean needing a wiring diagram / loom etc.
Anyway, i suspect my problem isn't just dizzy related, the stalling, i've ordered new vacuum hose, but is it just timing or something stuck in the carb? some muck from the tank?
So, any advice welcome, Anyone else gone back from points etc? or tried the 123? or tried the replacement part?
Anyone had the stalling issue and found any possible causes i can look for? Any kind words much appreciated, snowed under and really need it running asap

Hi,
Have you checked the brake vacuum hose?
Have a look here:

My van ran terribly and a new silicon hose was an instant fix.
Previous owner of my van also did the 009 swap. I have reverted it back now. I was lucky that I got the part of the loom from the amplifier along with the original distributor, so was able to strip down that and refit. The van ran miles better after that. Try scrappies etc to get the plug in wiring loom.
From memory, my vac unit on the side of the dizzy is at the front (ie. furthest side as you look at the engine bay when standing behind the van).
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. Its got a lot worse today, runs at 50mph + fine, but any other speed just rough, and at idle it just cuts out. Will be fitting new vacuum hoses to carb in the next day or so and have a new brake hose as described above on order. I will post here with my progress and results. Cheers guys.

I havent replaced the brake hose yet but replaced all the carb hoses and generally given everything a clean. There was a wire into the rear facing side of the carb which has broken off, so i fixed that, and there was one oily spark plug lead which for now I cleaned (plug engine end perfect though). It starts and idles, which is much better but still not perfect. I will replace the air and fuel filters when they arrive with the brake vacuum hose - also to be replaced. Then I am going to go all out to get a new electronic ignition unit. I really like the look of the 123 as its similar in cost to the full original copy from vw heritage. But i will see how funds go. In the meantime, im running, so thanks. This forum keeps these vans alive.

This is the ignition amplifier for a standard 1.9 DG ..

A further update, today I replaced the air filter (very dirty) and the brake servo pipe purchased from brickwerks as mentioned earlier. Continued improvement, every one of these changes has made things better. I now have it running better than it has for 5 years, but I can't help wanting to go further. I am seriously considering going to the 123ignition replacement distributor, all in part for part brand new its cheaper than the reissue electronic standard replacement offered by vwheritage (id need the loom and control boxes). I need a few other parts so this purchase may wait a month or two, but for now, fantastic, for a coupel of hours replacing vacuum hoses, filter and wiring, an amazing improvement.
