Hello

I just picked up a 1.6td Atlantic, I am new to the diesels with my last T25 being Aircooled.

Can anyone talk me round the parts of the engine or point me to some info. I have searched the site and as there is no Haynes I'm a bit unsure where to look

Well,

I will tell you what I see, I don't know if you only want to know parts of the engine or around the engine...

Close to the firewall, from top right to top left, fuel filter, the "thing" with red cap is the power assisted steering reservoir, then the electric water pump, starter motor and the black box is where some relays and fuses are, for glow plugs and other connections.

Then air filter, engine, fuel injection pump, alternator, oil filler neck, battery... the water reservoir, (should be connected to another water reservoir close to the reg number plate...), in the middle you can see the oil filter...

I plan to upload a larger photo with all the parts listed, hopefully this will help another person down the road.
Do you know where the oil cooler will be and the turbo? Do these engines have an N75 valve (or such) like the T4 2.5tdi?

Also is the belly pan/under tray important for these engines, its there but in poor condition

Hello,

this isn't a Direct Injection diesel engine, and has a mechanical pump so it's not tdi and it's not electronic - so no there's no N75 valve or ECU for that matter. Easiest way to find the turbo is to follow the exhaust back around the J-bend and it'll join up to the turbine housing. The oil cooler is what the oil filter screws onto - the coolant is what cools the oil.

Macflai did a good job going anticlockwise - you might be better off labelling things and pointing at them though.

That's really helpful, thanks! I also have a turbo diesel but haven't a clue mechanically speaking so this is a good start!

Where abouts is the engine code i.e. identifying an engine as a JX etc... apparently our van is not a JX but has a golf engine in it and I can't remember how to check it's proper identity... thanks!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but what engine is it in the picture, other than a 1.6td?

It's a 1.6 td .....type is a jx.
