1.7 diesel t25

ive recently bought a t25 1.7 diesel van,it hasnt been used for a pprox 2 years.it does run straight off the key but blows out a lot of smoke and theres a strong smell of diesel,engine is rattly but think this is normal for a diesel t25.not sure whether to take out and replace with a 1.9.any advice would be appreciated.

Give it a chance mate, it will need a bit of driving to run well after being stood up for so long.

cheers mate ,that was my thoughts to but didnt want to insure and tax it and find its knackered.

When I got a strong smell of diesel from my engine bay I traced it to a perished fuel pipe, it was the one on the end of the injectors that is blanked off.
I also found this wonderful website that helps explain what all the causes are for the different coloured smoke you get from the exhaust of a diesel

update ive drained tank and put new diesel in,also new air filter and fuel filter.and great its done the trick a lot less smoke and even runs better.byr now water pump has started leaking,its a 1.7 diesel in a 1989 van any ideas what the engine code is please.
