Tail gate gas strut upgrade

I'm looking for some guidance on the rear tail gas struts. I have a Fiamma bike rack which stays on the van pretty much all summer. At present I use an old curtain pole to keep the tail gate up. Is there a comprimise gas strut I could use That will hold the tail gate up with the rack on but will not throw the it into orbit if I take the rack off?

If not, I could do with a pointer in the direction of gus struts to work with the cycle rack. I will modify the fixings to enable a quick change over from one strut to another.

Btw, the cycles won't be on the rack - just in case you were thinking it :)

Thanks

I remember reading on here somewhere that you can get the struts gassed to different strengths in order to cope with bike racks. Unfortunately I can't remember which thread but somebody else may do. Try searching in the search bar or google it. Jon.

Thanks. I never thought about using google to search 80-90.

The answer was get struts charged to 1250N (ref terrygibson's post).

Now to find them cheap

If you look in the wiki there is a mod using a piece of copper pipe to lock the strut in place once the tailgate is open allowing you to keep the original struts.

I bought some new ones from brickwerks and they hold the tailgate with fiamma rack open just fine

I use a piece of copper pipe over the strut. When you open the boot and struts are fully extended the pipe falls into place. When you close it you just push it back in line. It is that strong you can hang off it!! I will try to uplad a picture. Its very cheap and works very well! :ok
