fuel pump - which is inlet / outlet?

Still trying to get a definitive answer on this... please help!

Just fitted a new mechanical fuel pump, the pump has 2 metal tubes (one above the other) one is an inlet for the fuel pipe from the tank, the other an outlet for the pipe from pump to carb.

Can someone please confirm which is which! Ive been told the top ones for the pipe from the fuel tank and the bottom for the carb (which is the way round the last one was fitted which didnt work!)

The Haines diagram shows top - carb, bottom - tank??

Would really appreciate a popular consensus of one or the other!!

Thanks everybody!

Greg

The top one comes from the tank the bottom one goes to the carb
