wiring a stereo

Can anyone help identify whats going on here. I am trying to get my stereo hooked up so I don't have to sing to myself all day.

Am I right in thinking the red wire is the ignition wire - it seems as though this is split to go in to some kind of box ( this must have been from a previous stereo) The red wire is later split again and goes to a front light.

Is the brown earth (looks yellow on my picture) ? that goes into the same box then also into the wire attaching thing.

Finally there is a blue and white wire - what could that be ?

I have traced the speaker cables back to where they need to go, and paired them up accordingly. That green wire is my front left speaker cable. Is it normal that the left rear and right front and back go up the other side of the van ?

The van itself is a 1981 westfalia diesel.

thanks for any help.

Dave

The red wire should be the permanent live (note the wire is not fused it takes it's power from the light switch supply) check what the PO has also wired to it it could be dangerous and cause a burn out. The brown should be the earth and that should be a grey/blue wire which is radio illumination from the sidelights if needed.

Thanks for that.

Not sure how that correlates to my "modern" day head unit though. see attahed

Obviously i will need to get a connector to plug together my speakers and then on electronics side I wouldnt know what goes with what ??

Eeep

This unit also has a 10 amp fuse that sits above where the wires plug into the unit. Would that make up for a non fused red wire that you mentioned above?

Seems to be some sort of standard but these aren't the VW colours

Wire Color... Wire Function

Yellow... 12V Constant / Memory

Red... Switch / Accessory

Black... Ground

Blue... Antenna Remote

Blue with White Stripe... Amplifier Remote Turn-on

Orange with white stripe... Dash light dimmer illumination

Understand that your stereo will need a 'switched live' to bring on the stereo but also a 'permanent live' to memorise station settings.
Of course if your not sure of your colours then test the function of each wire against the explaination above.
