Help! occassionally the oil pressure light on my aaz comes on, and then off again 500-800yds later. I have topped up oil and seems fine on dip stick. it does have the correct sump... is it ok to drive? want to go away in the next couple of days....?

Hello,
this should probably be in alternative engine section. We probably need a bit more info to work this out as to exactly under what circumstance the light comes on - it may well be an electrical fault, but don't assume that - there's a good section in the wiki explaining how the two oil pressure sensors work. The important thing is that you have the correct amount of oil - is your dipstick definitely correct? Only way to tell is to empty it and refill with the correct amount. Is it coming on when braking or cornering, and does it come on just when the oil's hot? If that is the case then there's probably cause for some concern, but otherwise I would also check the black/blue wire to your low revs oil pressure sender isn't earthing somewhere - that would cause it to come on, as would a poor connection (yellow wire) to your high revs oil pressure sender over 2000 rpm (normally accompnied with a buzzer).
Hope that helps a bit

Hi Ewan
Thanks for your reply. Its normally when starting. I think you could be right re electrics and I will check. I will also recalibrate the oil. It runs well and i am desperate not to destroy a good strong engine!
Thanks

oh and the buzzer does come on so i assume its the high pressure sender that is earthing?

Hello,
No - that means the high revs oil pressure sending *isn't* earthing above 2000 rpm - if it's disconnected it'll be going off all the time. When you say it happens "when starting" do you mean it only happens initially and not again while the engine's running, or do you meaning it happens every time you set off?
Are you sure you've got a jx oil pump and pickup? If you haven't and you've got the original then this can be a big problem as you either run overfilled, or the pickup isn't properly submersed and it just sips oil off the top - I wonder if the pump is struggling at startup to deliver enough oil? Does the engine sound tappety at all? It's fine if it sounds tappety for a few seconds which then goes away - this would indicate oil pressure at the head. If the tappety noise doesn't go away then I'd be concerned.

Hi and thanks
Sometimes when i start and run it, but not everytime - hence i think its electrical.
The conversion looks professional and so i assumed its the correct pump. Is there anyway of telling?
Many Thanks

Hello,
if you recalibrate the oil level and dipstick marks, then you can have a look with a torch when it's empty by removing the oil filler neck. That may not be necessary though - it may well be electrical. Have a search for "BOD" on here and you'll find hundreds of posts indicating faulty wiring in the PCB causing the buzzer to go off. If you're really concerned then probably the best thing to do for peace of mind is to get the oil pressure test with a "wet" gauge - this'll tell you for sure if the oil pressure is ok. I had a simple cheap electrical pressure gauge on mine as a sanity check - easy to install and while perhaps not perfectly accurate, quite good at giving you a sense of what's going on with oil pressure.
