Gasket obselete....help please

Hi folks
1.9 dg early cooling system
Has a water leak on the left hand side of the engine, where the pipe from the pump meets the block. Its the one that has the small section of rubber hose to join the two pipes.
All the water diagrams list it...and it seems to be universal to the early and later models
The gasket looks quite thick
so....anyone got any ideas where I can find one?
Can we remove, clean the block, and make a seal with instant gasket or the like?

thanks for reading

If you can't buy it..make it.
There are several thicknesses of gasket paper available.

The late system has a much smaller internal diameter, same flange shape and bolt holes .... gasket paper and a smear of Blue Hylomar would be my choice.

Gasket paper isn't just card..Note* the advert says: oil and water resistant.
I have seen ordinary card (cerial box) used before and it does work but I can't vouch for the longevity of the repair.

It would be best to use proper gasket paper about .75mm, I have used cereal box before but sometimes the fluid will wick through the fibres. Avoid instant gasket as the surplus will squidge and break off inside possible blockage issues.HTH

Weetabix box and blue hylomar sealed my old fella's Comma Wander's water pump for many years.

Emma the gasket for the pipe to water pump is still available
N 901 685 02
84p plus vat from VW
also in every head gasket or complete engine gasket kit so someone who's got a partial set may have one spare, I may even have one spare but I'm not at work today so can't check

Thanks all - sorry - been away from the internet
Aidan, I will hunt one down today. What you said about the gasket set got me thinking - I bought a load of vw bits n pieces and that had some gaskets in them.
Huge thanks

As long as I don't use Hubby's kitchen's knives to cut said weetebix box, and his spatula's to spread said hylomar, I think I am in the clear!!

I had a similar issue on the right hand side, a leaky flange where water from the engine block can vent to the header rail. Reattached flange, which was a VW Audi plastic part (!?!) with paper gasket and gasket compound but it still leaked. The plastic part was bowed and starting to crack. No surprise being attached to the hot engine.
Now replaced with lovely stainless flange from Brickwerks, which came with a proper gasket and bolts. I had to reuse the old bolts though as the new bolts were twice as (too) long.

No matter what engine those plastic flanges do not have the longevity of the metal ones - my 1Y engine when I got it had both an oil one and a coolant one failed on it, and the old CS engine's thermostat one distorted. What on earth were the designers thinking of when they decided to start to use plastic?
