Scangauge help

I wasn't sure where to post and I know atleast a couple of Syncro drivers use Scangauge.

All mine is doing is trying to connect and then turns off after a minute.

I have an AFN ECU which does connect to VAGCOM and measuring blocks.

Does Scangauge require a wire I may not have? Any ideas please?

Tom, under the 'Mode' menu, mine is set to 'ISO'. This sets the flavour of ODB comms protocol I believe.

If yours is set to something else, trying changing to ISO.

Set to ISO. Only turns on if I disconnect/reconnect OBD cable or press the home button.

Does sound like a connection issue, can you check your diag wire (K line) from the ECU is on pin 7 on the ODB connector ?

Grey/ white pin 7.

I'm out of ideas then. Can you see if it works in another vehicle ?

Good thinking. I have just tried it on my wife's A6, it connected within a few seconds. So must be a wiring issue?

Possibly, but if you can get a working connection from a laptop running VCDS I don't see why the Scangauge wouldn't work. Perhaps the K-line signal quality is borderline, and the Scangauge is struggling with it. It's a very basic, slow, digital comms protocol I believe. When extending the connection from an ECU at the back of the vehicle to a connector at the front, we might be stretching the length of the connection longer than what it was designed for. You might want to check the quality of the earth connection, and trace the grey/white wire to see its not near any sources of interference. I'm only speculating, my pickup has the OBD connector at the front and its OK.

PS. Re. interference, I did find in my Subaru van that when I had the OBD wires near to the LPG ECU (plastic case so not shielded) I could get no connection. After I'd fixed a grounded metal shield over the LPG ECU, the problem was fixed.

Thanks Andy, I thought it is was considering I can connect every time to VCDS. I will take a look when I get back from Eastern Europe.

Just an update. I now have a new ECU as the old one has been giving problems like hot start issues and holding revs.

Scangauge now also connects and works.

Plus the new ecu is giving me more low down power. Everything is good! :ok

Thanks for the advice.

No Lee, it's still an AFN ECU. The other ECU I was using was the same but was faulty. It has made a massive difference all round.

Hi Tom,

What differences has it made? I am going to be getting a scan gauge soon and as we have the same loom set up I am just wondering if I am exposed to any of the problems you had. How did you find out it was the ECU?
