Overheating - blew out a core plug - what damage?

My warning light was coming on at odd times, like almost immediately after starting from cold as well as other times there seemed to be no other evidence of overheating. A friend suggested that the temp sender unit was duff so I have continued to drive it while waiting for a new sender unit to arrive. Unfortunately whilst travelling down the M40 today the warning light came on so I went on to the next services (2miles), at the slip road to the service area there was a loud pop and steam everywhere! It seems the pop was the core plug coming out. There was plenty of coolant in it at the start of the journey, only about 20 miles. Any ideas of the cause or what other damage might have occurred, too scared to even look at the moment :(

As we have no idea what engine you have, we can't really help you.
Only thing I can say is, the warning light is there for a reason .
It warns against over temp AND low coolant ?

Give us a bit of a clue?
