OK ok ok - I have read the wiki.

I have the bolt and nut screwed down so that bush is flush with the bush..I can feel the hole. I tap away on the bolt and get absolutely NOWHERE!!! It resolutely fails to go in. Given up for today. Will try again tomorrow I guess.

perhaps I need a smaller hammer for the space...

Changed it once before, so I know it should bloody go in!!

Ultimate frustration!!!!

sorry.

Anyone in Medway done it recently care to give me a masterclass??? :D

As Ghost said...character building.....

stick the bush in the freezer overnight then wipe it with engine oil just before you fit it.

Have you got the old bush out first? if not get a M12 tap put a small smear of grease on the tip wind it into the old bush when the tip of the tap bottoms out keep turning and the bush will wind itself up the tap and out. :ok

ok, to provide an update.

I ordered a new starter motor and bush from brickwerks. They arrived and I bounced down to the van full of confidence. But the bush did not want to know. at all. I was told that I should be able to get it to bite a tiny bit...and then you can use the bolt with the nut screwed to tap it in. I tried it with the screw extractor...and just buggered the bush.

so, got another 3 at the parts shop today. Offered it up to the hole working from the engine bay and gave it a little twist....and it bit!!! It stayed there!!!! so gave it a little wiggle to get it out again, did the oil between the thumb and forefinger (place on thumb, fill with oil to brim of bush, then over the top and push down. Cleaned it off a bit so I could grip it.....twist it in and it still bit!! Then got the top bolt from the starter motor, screwed the nut on, and then put the bolt down inside the bush. The bolt goes in until the nut rests on the bush. Had a small hammer, and, still working from the engine bay, held the bolt and tapped gently with the hammer. stopped frequently to "feel" and ensure that a) it was going in, and b) I wasn't buckling it. Its pretty much in now....just got to go and tap the last ickle bit in!! Well chuffed with myself!!

Never know, bloody thing might start tomorrow! Not going to try and put the starter motor in....its brand new and I don't want to drop it!! (and hubby took the electrics off, so not sure where it all goes. Will do it with him tomorrow.
