water tanks

Hello All
1.9dg engine Autosleeper. Just checked pressurized coolant tank which although full to the brim at running temperature has now dropped(20 mins of driving) below the level of the main pipe that is joined to the thin coolant pipe that runs round the lip of the engine but the reserve tank is still at max. Shouldn't the pressurised tank have drawn water from the reserve tank ? thank you

The Darlek cap may have failed, If it isnt blue replace it anyway.
Or you may have a leak that allows air to be drawn in, when the system cools.

Start off by running the engine till hot and look for leaks.

Thanks. New darlek albeit GSF. Have replaced three pipes in last week and have been checking for leaks today but can't find any. Should the pressurised tank be drawing water from the top up tank before dropping below the level of the pipe running to the thin pipes at top of engine bay?

it could be air left in the system working its way round, brim the header tank and top up the tank behind the flap.
had the same with mine after i changed the temp2 sensor.

now the van is cooling, the pressurised tank is filling again. The GSF pressurised tank doesn't have a min level mark. Could anyone let me know where the minimum should be when the engine has been driven for a while? thaks

Header tank, the one INSIDE the engine bay, the one with the pressure cap, this must always be full right to the top, always, forever, period, fullstop.

taken from the wiki and baxter's bleeding the system also in the wiki

E D I T as the coolant heats it passes from the header tank (allways remaining full to the brim) to the top up tank and as it cools its drawn back to the header tank, the header tank allways remaining full to the brim.

Thanks, I had read it and been through the Haynes but missed it. My header tank is not drawing from the top up tank(which remains on the max although the header is emptying). I have checked the pipe that connects the two and its clear, I'm really scratching my head on this(to put it mildly).

E D I T. The engine had cooled so I disconnected the pipe to the cap on the header tank, the pressure released and the header tank filled right up up

it must have air in the system, it will allways rise to the highest point/s as its pushed/pumped around the system. have you got air in the rad as well?

No air in rad - have done proper bleed many times over last few days - but will try again

with the header cap off does the level drop when you rev it?

Does the cap pass the check test?

hi there
i am having the exact same problem, how did you find out it was a blockage in coolant pipe?
also how is the air getting into pressure tank rather than drawing from top up tank.
I am driving up to leeds next week from birmingham and ime a bit worried.
mines a 1.6td jx

Cleaned out the bleed pipes from top of engine. This was in one............

While the other was blocked by plastic, the T' junction mold hadn't been cleaned out properly, Had to drill it out. I'm sure the pressure build-up is what eventually caused the seals to go.

Go & check your bleed pipes, Just disconnect from engine & check that coolant can run out. If it can't look further

Mine did it a few years ago too and it cost me an engine (long story...) Pays to keep an eye on this folks :ok

Annoyingly I got excited too soon. Glad I found this pipe but coolant system still not working. I have since bled and used correct coolant but level still drops in header tank -a ir must be getting in somewhere. AA have done sniff test but I,m wondering if it's worth double ckecking and will check that pipe again just in case something has worked its way round the system and got stuck again.

No, I doubt it, but quite what that clear pipe is without a bit more info or a picture is a bit tricky. Unless someone has replaced the std rubber pipe that normally goes to the rear of the L/H head ?

By auger, do you mean a type of restrictor ? Can you blow down that pipe (dalek cap off) ?

Mine was boiling the coolant in the l/h head due to a blockage and a faulty Dalek cap was not releasing the pressure.
