Fuel breather pipes end bits

I'm just about to change the fuel breather pipes on my 1.9dg, out of curiosity I pulled the top pipe from the breather tank back, and there's no end bits on it (part number 321 201 890 as per wiki) just about 250 mm of pipe.

1st of all, do i need to source these, or can i get by just increasing the length of the pipe, and second, does anyone have a piccie where its supposed to route as mine was just poked back following the same route as the lower pipes?
I do have a strong smell of petrol, but dont appear to have any leaks when filling to the top, just a persistent pong, so I'm hoping its just the pipes, or maybe even the short top hoses.

Any advice gratefully accepted.

Cheers
Dan

I think that it is just a breather - I don't know what that end piece does as the anti-spill valve is in the top, possibly it's just there to prevent bugs crawling in.

Thanks for the reply Oldie, i'm a bit concerned that the wiki shows a rubber pipe joining the end bits on at 580mm long, so wondered if they are venting to close to the wheel arch and contributing to the petrol smell. But I've got to change all the other pipes first as I dont think they've been done, then go through the other suspects, grommets etc, hope the tank isnt perforated (although I dont appear to get any spill even when I fill right up to the top of the filler neck, so I might be lucky ( ).

Did you find the problem? i too have a smell of fuel all the time and no leeks. I replaced all the rubber gromits and the rubber seel around the filler and it still stinks!

I've got one side done, pipes changed, still a smell of petrol, so it may be I need to drop the tank to do the grommets. But ive niticed the rubber connector on the filler doesnt look brilliant, so was thinking of changing that anyway. Meanwhile, keeping the window closed
