In theory it should be like for like otherwise you will need to rejet the carb. It sounds like you have a 1300 twin port engine. Single port engines have a different mounting bolt spacing so won't fit anyway. There are other carb options Weber, Bosal etc but all need work to set them up.
Why do you need to replace it anyway? They are vary rarely unrepairable unless they are corroded or cracked.

Agree with BigHerb. Talk to Roger Ball in Clacton (his number is in carb section in WIKI). Only thing that wears on them is the throttle flap and Roger rebuilds those better than new using phosphor bronze bushes - mail order. You just regasket to complete. Job done. Lot cheaper than buying a new carb. You can still buy new ones (Mexican).

thanks guys, i'd already give it a dude to look at because it was running lumpy and cutting out when warm... his diagnostic was that the carb was u/s... i'll get back in touch with him today and see if it can be repaired..? Cheers for the comments though... you'd think after 7 years on this scene I might of learnt something...?

There is nothing to go wrong on those carbs other than wear in the shafts and leaky gaskets or diaphrams - all of which can be sorted. To my knowledge Roger was refurbing Beetle carbs before the T25 appeared on the scene and not much he doesn't know about the Solexs.
Would be interested to see what he regards as u/s.

Bemused as well as you by that Ralph...
maybe thinks its the cost of shaft bushes too much or not available anymore. Float needle or seat?
