Free camping in Devon ?

Hi all,

Firstly wanted to say hi from me (Michael) and my better half Fran, and not forgetting my 1983 air cooled T25 hi-top monty :). Not posted at all yet until now...

But mainly wanted to ask about Devon!

This year we've spent most of our spare weekends around Wales and the east coast as we live in Nottingham, but having planned a long weekend we thought we might head off to Devon? Not definite and we're on a fairly tight budget, of which petrol takes up most of it! So wanted to know if there were any good places to free camp either in north or south Devon? Plus other things to watch out for?

Plus will the M5 be a nightmare Thursday morning? (gulp!)

Eagerly awaiting your most valuable experience from the T25 community :)

Thanks
Michael, Fran and monty !

You'll be lucky to find ANYTHING free in Devon at this time of year mate.
Don't forget tourism is their big industry and they need to make a few bob!
The best bet might be to find the corner of a field somewhere on a farm or a pub car park where they'll let you stay over after a few beers (with permission of course)
I'd be tempted just to head in that direction and just play it by ear...
Try the South Hams - in the vicinity of Bigbury, Challaborough or Mothecombe beaches.
Won't be difficult to find a quiet spot in the evenings I reckon if not during the day...

I haven't looked into it but Britstops offer free overnight camping if you are not fussy about where?

Devon is lovely at the moment but I know Bristol is a nightmare while they spend a year digging up the motorway so allow plenty of time there! The M5 stops at Exeter and becomes the A38 & A30 - both of which can be bad for traffic especially on a Friday night and all day Saturday (main holiday changeover day)...if you have time it is well worth finding the old A roads which the M5 replaced and the old routes for the A30/A38 roads in Devon - they lead to the same places, but are quiet!
