stalling and poor idle solution

some time back i had a problem with the bus stalling and not wanting to take on any load. i had loads of responses to solutions and again thanks.
a few days back the same thing again, only not any where near home, but near a mates parents place and he just happened to be home. got a tow there and again checked for vacuum leaks, idle solinoid, etc, and sprayed carb cleaner down her throat. a little while later it was fine.
came home and told my tale to a neighbour who was a farmer from zimbabwe who said they always had the same problem with VW's of all sorts because of the heat.
an old boy told him that because the engine gets so hot in a tight space the mechanical fuel pump gets a kind of vapour lock that limits the fuel.
the solution is to take a cold wet rag and cover the pump, which cools the metal , which cools the fuel. keep the cover off as long as you can to disapate the heat too.
after 5 min. or so you should be good to go...until the next time.
thinking back iwas in a slow moving lane for some time, so althoug the temp gauge did not rise, when i took the engine cover off it was very hot under there
just wondering, if this is new to anyone, or old news?
