When in neutral we are over-revving - help

Hi,

We are new to the site and have just purchased a 1982 T25 1.9 water cooled van. Last week we had to replace the trailing arm after being mis-sold a dodgy MOT with the van!! However, we are in love with our bus and need further help with our next problem!

The engine starts fine first time (after replacing the dodgy battery), but after running for about 10 mins we can hear it over - revving and more so when we are in neutral or going down the gears. Can anyone help us with this?

Thanks for getting back to us. We are spending tomorrow on the van and will take a look - will let you know!

other possible revving reasons are..
stuck fast idle cam. (busted spring or seized shaft)
throttle stop incorrectly adjusted to counter mixture issue

Check your throttle cable mine recently slipped and caught wedging open the throttle. Try adjusting the cable?

Thank you very much for your help and advice. We were a little held up with the weather but managed to get out this evening and discovered, after much cleaning, fiddling and head scratching, that the circlip for the accelerator cable (in the engine bay) was missing and therefore the cable unseated itself. This seemed to stop the throttle going back to the correct position. We have not given it a test drive yet - but feel confident this was it!

We also discovered today that the 1.9 watercooled engine on a 1982 bus is quite rare... and that parts would be difficult to get hold of... do you know if this is true?

Hiya,

a 1982 watercooled is VERY early - thought they came in 1983. And not rare per se....my girl has an early cooling van on an A reg.....guessing you have the DF or DG model. However, parts are rapidly becoming obselete, particularly for the cooling system.

BUT>>> you can put a later engine in the bay, with the cooling system you have. You can also replace the pipes to make it the later system.

Hope this helps,

Em
xx

It's a very common engine, it is most probably a1.9 DG or DF, a lot of parts can be hard to find but the situation is improving as heritage etc start to make more parts. I a 83 and 84 registered 1.9 and have found all the parts ok so far. All these vans seem to have issues when you first get them.

Cheers for your input. It is so great to know that there are those of you in the know - we are very new to this and a little daunted by the amount of work!

We have the 1.9 DF model.

Y reg is the earliest reg I have seen for a watercooled. I see it every day both outside and inside :D

DF is the less powered of the two engines iirc
