Hi,
I've replaced the gasket on my 1.9 TD rocker cover which was leaking oil with little improvement. Are there any different sorts of gaskets I could try which may help or other tips?

Before going any further, are you sure it's the cover that's leaking and not the pushrod tubes?

Having the same problem .new ones fitted but still leaking.

Them there diesels don't normally have pushrod tubes!

I think this should probably be in alternative engines as it's a specific problem to the 1.9TD. Since the 1.9TD engines weren't designed for the van, they are designed to sit at 15 degrees not 50 degrees, and so they don't have the more secure valve cover and gasket like the JX, but the three bolts on top. I live with mine leaking a bit - hylomar around the lower edge and cover will help a bit, but don't be tempted to overtighten the top three bolts as you'll end up having to replace the cam bearings!

Sorry not to be able to provide a solution - I'd be interested to hear what other people have done!

If engine breathers are blocked it will push oil out anywhere it can . If your engine has a breather pipe attatched to rocker cover and the stub it attatches to is located in a square/oblong pressing remove rocker cover and look at underside, it will have a mesh that is held in pace by a welded surround.Drill out spot welds (try to avoid going through rocker cover or you will need to re braze)and remove mesh block. You will see its a series of mesh wafers with holes pointing in alternate directions.If you can drill the spot welds holding wafers together then do so and wash them out in petrol/spirit/degreaser If unable to drill apart just spread the edges open to clean. then put them back under welded surround and braze the spot welds up.then refit rocker cover with new gaskets. Done quite a few of these on passats and golfs.
