Just driven my van (1981 1600 air cooled) about 15 miles and thick white smoke started pouring from the exhaust. I had just topped up the oil and stuck 20 quids worth of petrol in it, it's been standing approx 2 years before today.

Well you're burning oil. Question is why. After two years standing it could be anything to be honest. Gut feeling says you'll have to strip it down and find out what seized/broke/came adrift.
