when i was welding Jambo up i decided to do away with the front pillar mounted ariel as there was a good deal of rust around the mounting holes.
Ive since bought a new ariel from Brickworks that mounts on the front sloping panel, however i could do with some measurements as to where to mount ithttp://www.brickwerks.co.uk/shop?page=shop.pro ... gory_id=55" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
It all looks a bit crowded under the dash and dont want to drill into anything.
I should have done this before i put the dash and windscreen in but i got carried away at the time.

What options are there available so i dont need to drill a great big hole in the bodywork. would it be feasble to mount one behind the grill at the front?. Just dont want to start drilling holes in the bodywork now and let even more water in

Ah, well if you have no aerial fitted then i agree, i too would be loathe to drill a hole for one, its spoils the purity of the fronet , well in my op anythow
im sure there are others on nhere with more knowledge of a suitable alternative, if you were changing the screen out then a built inone would be a nice option,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but ££

MM i welded the holes up from the previous eariel as the rust had set in , dont want it to happen again and yes the front does look better with nothing there

aye fitted one of those to the xrissvagon,
what about a gutter mount one, also i seem to recall seeing someplace a stick on one for the front screen,

I had the same issue with rust holes in the o/s A pillar, from an aerial mounted there. I fitted a Brickwerks one, on the o/s and it looks fine. If you ask, Brickwerks will also supply a template for where to line up things to drill the hole.

And bear in mind that the pillar mounted aerial was likely fitted when the van was converted so has lasted many years until it rusted out. And it probably only rusted out because the fitter didn't bother to apply any rust prevention to the bare metal; if you take the time to do this on a fresh hole then I would think that it would last probably last as long as the rest of the van.

One other thing, if you do go down this route, then check that the aerial's mast base-tube can fit underneath as I'm pretty sure that L/H/D vans have the necessary hole drilled whereas r/h/d's dont, assuming of course yours was a van originally as a r/h/d Caravelle might have it all nice and ready. Mine didn't so I had to drill said hole to accomodate the mast base-tube

but I cant say that im impressed, still get reception issues, sometimes.

I tested this out alot, cos the misses likes a radio station in the next state, so she constantly tries to tune into it, but it doesnt work that often. Where on other/new cars, works fine

Im thinking of putting an external antenna on.

agree, but its the product that has appeared to rust faster than the orifice, also they are not a straight fit on a lhd, see xrissvagon, its more hassle than its worth in my opinion

Yeah, it wasn't exactly a 5 minute job as I thought it would be. But I was committed in that I'd drilled the main hole before painting the van and then discovered the aggro work afterward It's not rusted, yet, though

how long has it been fitted? I ask cos they are nice twigs and wonder if we had a duff one?

I fitted it a year ago. Mind you, I put a little machine oil on the mast to help it move up and down so perhaps that's helped preserve it. But, I thought it was a quality piece of kit, bearing in mind how they used to be poorly plated chrome, etc years ago when you would fit them as a matter of course because VM's didn't normally fit radios. Maybe you had a duff one?
