Rear number plate lights.

My number plate lights at the rear are not fitted. They are loose and slightly dangling.

They work but I recently had an MOT and was told that they are really a failure if they dangle.

They are in one piece and I can see two slots in the panel where they appear to slide in but don't seem to be able to fit them??

I've looked in Haynes but it doesn't show how the housing attaches to the bodywork??

Any ideas? Am I something missing?

Tried to look in Wiki but can't find anything either.

Does it make sense?

You need to remove the tail gate rubber seal, and then fit them, once clipped into place, you refit the rubber seal.

The lights fit into a black holder that clips onto the body. If the holders are broken they won't clip in anymore. Holders are obsolete so 2nd hand is your only option.

Below is an example

And one with the light fitted

Ok thats good.

Stupid question number two?

I have those housings and know to remove the rubber but then how does it fit?

Is it the 2 small plastic arms that fit over the steel under the rubber?

I may be trying to fit them the wrong way round.

Doh!!

Sorry no, just had a look. Under the seal there are two 'slots' in the metal lip about a couple of inches apart. There is a matching 2" lip section on the lamp housing that slot between these...

If you can wait while I charge me camera up I'll put a couple of pictures up later....

I don't think it matters too much if the little locking arms on the sides have snapped off - they have on my other number plate light and it's just as secure

That's great!

Thank you so much for your help..... what's missing is the very small plastic strip that slides between the indents it appears to have broken off.

Thanks I obviously need to buy two replacements.

Thanks again!!

Also the metal lip on the van under the rubber is bent and damaged on my van all along so it will be bit more difficult to fit.

Probably what broke the plastic strip bit. I'd straighten/flatten it up as best you can before fitting the replacements
