Engine Power Loss

Hi,

We set off to France in our 1986 fuel injection 2.1l Westy....1 and a half hours later on the M1 (cruising along at 70mph) the speed suddenly starts dropping... the speed then went down to about 30mph, then I put it into 3rd but there was still no power........the engine seemed to be running but just no acceleration. So I pulled onto the hard shoulder and started it up again ....Went about 1 mile on and the same thing happened.

I kept restarting it and carrying on until we pulled off and rang AA. They cleaned the fuel filter- loads of brown sludge came out. Everything was fine again for 40 minutes until we hit a traffic jam so we stop, turn engine off, traffic jam clears and I start it up again- same problem....by which time id loss all confidence in taking it to france so we got towed home.

Today i've taken it out and driven it around for about and hour and half and its fine....however after id stopped, left it 10 mins then started it up again and there it was again- no acceleration....turned it off, started up again and drove it around for 30 mins with no problems????????????????????

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Paul

This sounds like a fuel pressure problem, clue is in the brown sludge. Tank could be full of crud. First do the basics - change that filter! It's an inline canister so can't be cleaned out with any success. Might get you home but then put a new one on. Then if it still happens check your fuel pressure. Pump or pressure regulator could be faulty if any of that brown sludge has got to either of them.
Try this first and let us know how you get on.
