Quick fix on speedo?

I wonder if anyone can help, my speedo has stopped working and I have traced it back to the circlip keep coming off the end of the cable through the grease cap. Before it wore the square hole on the grease cap into a round and I replaced it and it was fine for a while. It it has done it again however and the end of the cable is spinning freely. I tried to put the circlip on more tightly but the cable is not biting in the hole. Is there a quick fix I can do before I get the chance to replace the grease cap again Or get it looked at properly, I would really appreciate any advice, many thanks.

This happened to me and I used a centre punch around the square hole on the hub to tighten it as the hole had worn round. If its the cable end that's gone round take the cap off and put a small washer on the end of the cable to stop the rounded bit going into the hole.
I was on a long trip when it went and before I bogged it I used an iPhone app as a speedo.

Sorry dude I'm being a bit thick did you use a centre punch to push the metal down to make the hole square?
And if you put a washer inside the cap is at to stop it going all the way through and did you put the circling back on the outside? I am probably having trouble imagining it I will have to go outside and have a look, but the iPhone app is a good idea, I used to use it on my motorbike to check the speed and I never even tout of that doh!!!!!

I bodged mine with some epoxy putty (like quick steel but a quid from Poundland) a couple of weeks ago. It's worked fine since. My thinking is if I need to get the cap or cable off it the future the putty will just chip off.

Yes punch around the hole with the cable end in situ, this will tighten the hub cap onto the cable end. Putting a washer on the inside without the circlip on the outside will take care of it if the cable end has rounded by keeping the rounded bit out of the hole.

Any one know the size of the circlip as i have a simular problem too. I can get one from JK but i'll end up paying more in postage than the 50p clip!
