I am off to France in a couple of weeks and want to take my IPad with a sim for surfing whilst away. Will a Uk sim work or do I need a French one? I have read various forums but still confused -can someone put it in plain English for me please.

If you use a UK Sim in France you will have a phone bill for about 2 grand when you get home. Data roaming charges are astronomical.

I have a monthly pay as you go O2 sim and this does not work. Last time I looked into this no UK sims work. The only option was to buy a sim when in a European country which would only work in that particular country.
Think it was about €15 for a months use.
That was 2 years ago so not sure if this as changed though.

I know (from personal experience) the forum and it's members is always useful in that respect but still think some sort of breakdown cover is a bit more prudent.
A whole day spent at a Mucky's where I limped the van to on the advice of my French breakdown assistance when France was closed for the day (had to happen on a Sunday) showed me the worth and wonderful camararaderie of 8090, various emails had a temp repair sorted by evening and enabled us to finish our trip and get home under our own steam.
