hi all,

it looks like the starter motor has given up the ghost, i need to get a replacement, can i get any or are there different for different ages etc? mine is pretty rusty so no chance of a model number etc.

i have a 1600cc 1981 Aircooled.

cheers

Hi, Try just kampers or vw heritage. To be fair they are hot on sending stuff. Used them for the last 6 years without fuss...or try you local motor factors. If you use th vw heritage wesite it gives u the vw part number.....

There are different ones but all petrol manuals gearboxes use the same one up to 1985

just a clunk when i turn the key. i have it before, but very , very intermittently, this time it every turn.

i've made sure the battery is fully charged, still nothing.

try a jump lead from the battery minus to the body of the solenoid and see if it makes any difference..sometimes a bad earth connection can give these results.

the solenoid is the silver tube in the engine bay right? do i clamp onto the shell or the terminals?

the solenoid is the thing on the starter motor that all the cables bolt to..just clamp it onto its metal body and then to the battery -

I had the same problem. Took starter motor apart and there was a little surface rust here and there. Used wet and dry sandpaper to remove it, then WD40'd it, re-assembled and now works a treat! Could try that :?:

Guess what, it was the flippin battery!

had the breakdown out, as soon as he put his jump leads on it fired up! turns out the battery was way too small, it had worked fine so i never thought to check the size.

just picked up a bigger one from a local scrapper, runs a lot better now (apart from the blowing exhaust).

cool
