New diesel pump in an AAZ but it drives like a 1600cc T2

It is summer which means our T25 has broken down somewhere inconvenient. It has just had a new diesel pump fitted to the AAZ engine by a main dealer in southern Sweden. The missus got the car back (I am back home in Norway back at work) and the dealer said that they were not sure what the correct pump timing was
They admitted that the van felt a bit slow.
According to 'er indoors it drives more like my 1600cc T2 than a 1.9TD. It has a huge flat spot in first gear, there is no power below 10km/h, and the mid range torque has all but disappeared. She has gone back to the dealer and is discussing the matter further.
I considered the possibility that the previous owner has tweaked the timing/fuel flow on the pump. But even so the AAZ should feel more like a 1900 wasserboxer/2000cc Aircooled than a 1600 air cooled? Any suggestions as to the problem? I take it that driving it a long distance in this state could damage the engine?
Thanks in advance.
