Steering Knuckle Questions

I am searching for an offside steering knuckle for a 1987 T25. Having quoted my VRN to VW, I was told that the correct part no is 251407312AE. When searching online, I see one of these http://en.serial-kombi.com/right-spindl ... 37625.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, which looks right. I recall, having bought new calipers a few years ago, that they are indeed Girling.

However, the only available parts I can find are the 251407312AG variant. I read somewhere that this is designed for the Mk2 caliper. I assume from the above that my bus must have the Mk1 caliper.

Does anyone know: (1) what are the differences between these two parts and (2) is the AG backwards-compatible with AE, ie can replace it without modification and accommodate the Girling caliper or whatever?

Another thing: on P 40.14 of my Bentley, it states:

'When installing replacement steering knuckles with the following Part Numbers:

251 407 311 AE
251 407 312 AE

contact could be made with the brake disc in the area indicated (arrow).

Grind down the cast lug on the steering knuckle approx 8.0 to 10.0 mm... to provide clearance for the brake disc. If necessary also modify the splash plate...'

What's all this about? It seems odd to be required to modify a new part. Do they do this in the factory? If the AG variant was indeed compatible, would I need to perform a similar exercise on it?
