Lifters

Hi all,

After putting my engine back together..

New cylinder heads
Hydraulic followers
New Weber Carb and manifold
Etc

I have done 300 miles and all is good ......except it has developed a rattle from one of the followers..it only starts rattling above 3000rpm and goes away if I lift my foot off slightly. I gave it a 40 mile blast the other day and it went completely. I use it as a daily driver 5 miles too work and 5 miles back.. I have also noticed that I seem to be getting a lot of mayo on the end of the dipstick and inside the oil filler cap. I know this is due to short journeys but why has one of the followers started to tap above 3000rpm ?

Engine sounds sweet and no rattles when I start from cold.I installed the new lifters and set them by adjusting 1.5 turns as per ratwell. I have changed the oil 3 times but it still rattles.
Im off too Scotland next Sunday ..so am a little worried as I dont want to smash a lifter.Dont get me wrong its not ear deafening its just so annoying..
I have noticed an oil leak from the oil pressure switch..do you think this is linked to the built up pressure above 3000rpm and causing a lifter to be starved of oil ?

Any ideas please ?

Glenn.

If you haven't already done so, drop the oil and recheck your "valve clearances" (or preload as they're hydraulic lifters). Supposed to recheck after the first couple of hundred miles anyway.

this sounds ominous that you have salad cream in the sump, short journeys is no excuse, it simply shouldn't happen.. no mayo here with my short journeys.
the oil pump needs unadulterated oil to maintain tappet gallery pressure. If the oil is contaminated with coolant ...at higher rpm's the tappet(s) will empty of clean oil and get noisy..

I think it's Aircooled, clarification would be nice though.

Oh ok
still that said lifters get noisy because they can't pump up.
Reasons for that are
poor pressure
poor oil
worn lifter spring
wrongly adjusted
not filled (new install)

there isnt much else I can think of.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replys.

Its a 2.0 cu Aircooled.
The mayo has mostly gone. I gave it a 50 mile run and its nearly clear. I have readjusted all of the followers using ratwells instructions. Set each one with piston at TDC with spark plugs removed. Long screwdriver down each pot so I can feel piston at TDC and dizzy pointing at each plug lead.
This will mean that they have been reset twice now and had 3 oil changes along with filters. Followers are set to 1.5 turns on the adjustment screw. I did not want to set them at 2 turns as thats when valve seat damage can happen as the valve can be left slightly open as you know.
Its quieter but as before their is one that taps every now and again. Its not affecting the performance of the van.
With regard to oil pressure..the lights goes off straight away just as she fires up and their are no other knocks at all even at cold. Im using Millers 20/50 oil...Albeit I prefer Morris 20/50 but I could not get that this time.

It must be down to the fact that installing new lifters on an old Cam is causing the problem. Im not going to pull it apart again as its head doing now. It will just have to have a slight tap..
Im thinking of getting rid soon anyhow as its becoming a money pit. Im thinking of buying something newer.

Thanks again.

Glenn.

Thinking about it before I did all this work it was always a little tappety on one cylinder..im guessing its a worn cam lobe..

Oh well im sure a 1000 mile trip around scotland will shut it up...eh..lol :P
