Ok guys. Now I'm no mechanic, far from it for that matter but I have a problem with water leak & I have no idea where its going. The temperature gauge light came on on a recent drive so checked the overflow tank & it was dry as a bone. Topped it up to get me home & two or 3 times since & its still loosing water. Red light on temp gauge only went out when I added more antifreeze & water to the expansion tank. But still having to top up the overflow tank about every 30 miles. I''ve checked the obvious hose connections but the odd thing is there is no sign of water leaking on the driveway when parked up.
Any suggestions

First off can we have a little more info?
Petrol or Diesel?
Do you top up the tank with the level sender in it?
Are there any signs of leaking coolant? green / brown staining around the tank with the sender in?
What colour is your tank cap? some are better quality than others.
I had a tiny crack in the tank, allowing water under pressure to escape, dripping onto the hot exhaust, never to be seen again.

Ok further details:

Diesel engine
I topped up both tanks. Only the tank in the engine bay once & the overflow tank numerous times
There are no signs of coolant around the tank with the sender in
The cap is yellow & feels like a good fit.

I plan to top it up tonight take it for a quick spin to get it up to temperature, keep it running on the drive, parked on a few big sheets of paper to see where its leaking from?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated

If the engine hasn't been affected, oil isn't milky.. and the coolant isn't over pressurising the header (blowing the cap off..)
It's safe enough to look for a radiator leak, any of the half a million joints, or a water pump failure

oh and your oil cooler

No milky oil, no over pressuring, the rad is only a year old so I think I best get searching
