Noise at low revs..

Wonder if anybody can help me. My vw t3 1.6td has developed an annoying loud noise which occurs at low revs in the lower gears. 2nd seems to be the worst. When you drive off and go straight into second you have normal sound for the very a very short time but then it starts to make a noise as you accelerate but it disappears again at high revs. It prob just occuring between about 2000 and 3000 revs. If you rev very high in all gears before changing then you dont get any noise problems at all.... Any ideas?
Cheers,
Snowy

We need a bit more info in order to help.
What does the noise sound like?
Rattling? Banging? Clicking? Clonking? Screeching? etc.
If it's controllable through the engine revs, then it's probably engine or gearbox related, but could be something totally unrelated.

I would say screetching. There's no getting away from it in 2nd unless the revs are high and it sounds completely normal again. Cheers, snowy.

Cheers. I'll take a look at the engine when the van is going and see if i can identify where it's coming from...

Now I have time to play with it here's some more details for anyone that can help...
The noise sounds like a rattle or grinding noise that comes from the back of the engine just near the belt. If you ride in 3rd at around 20-25kpm its the worst (so I guess around 1.5-2k rpm). Any faster in third and the noise goes. You get it a bit at similar revs in first and second but it comes and goes much quicker.
I live in holland and I'm looking to sell the van soon because we're coming back at the end of the year. Hopefully it's a quick and cheap fix so any ideas of things that I could check myself would be very appreciated!
Cheers!
Snowy

Fan's at the front - electrically driven.
In English they are called drive belts.
