wheels and tyres

Hi folks, I need some help. I have read the wiki on syncro wheels, and various threads on here

Currently on the syncro I have 5.5 rims with 185 r14 on them. They have slight cracking on the walls on a couple of tyres, so thinking I need to replace.

On the plate in the door it state 6 rim.

My camper has Weller 6J on it, currently with the 185 R 14 on them. One tyre is well worn, so a straight swap is out.

I want to have something that I can use off roading with you guys in August in Devon, drive on the road, and use in winter to get to work. Please note, it won't be doing several thousand road miles....my annual mileage of 15-20K is split between all three vehicles.

Happy to spend some money to get the right things, but please remember I will not be doing the extreme stuff....think beginner here, at least for the immediate future.

Q1. Are the wellers of suitable strength for off roading? (have read comments about the merc wheels being soft?)
Q2. Do I stay with the 185 r14c tyre, but get all terrain (?) or winter tyres?
Q3. Is there a better alternative?
Q4. Can I leave the 5.5 rims and get some better tyres?
Q5. If the answer to 4 is yes....what size tyre can I go for?

Sorry for the simple questions, but I have read so much my head is spinning.

Thanks for reading

Em

Go for 15" Merc wheels with BFG's on. They are good on and off road plus look great.

Whs, not much tyre choice in 14". Mercedes, or Mefro steels, with a set of BFG All Terrains will last for years. Have BFG,s on the Jeep, 30,000 miles, and still plenty tread left!

Get a set of 15" rims off a W126 S Class Mercedes ( 1980 - 1991). They are 7 x 15 with the right ET and are well capable of doing what you will want to do. They are not 'soft' as people say. I have seen Mefros bend just as much!

The other Merc option is a wheel off the C Class ( 1994 to 2000) Now these are not as strong as the ones mentioned above but good enough. A set of BFG M/T tyres or similar should be fine. 90% of it is driver skill and 10% is tyres anyway.

On a Mercedes wheel, the first three numbers on the part number will tell you the model they came off. Example A126 is an S Class wheel, A202 is off a C Class, A210 is off an E Class from 1995 - 2002 etc etc
