1987 T25 1.9 DG water Cooled

At the back of the nearside front wheel arch is this container. I have looked in Haynes to see what it is but no joy. I haven't been under the van to see where the tail pipes go to.
The pipe just below it is the filler for my main domestic water tank
Can anyone kindly explain what it is and function.
