Hello All...

I decied to set the timing on Daisy.. spluttrering a bit and maybe pinging (!!??) under load. (Aircooled CU '83)

So went looking for the points, as I have done the procedure before on my type 1's ..

And couldn't find them. So I looked up the disi number 237 023 007 and this seems to have electric points >? is this correct?

If so, do I just proceed to set the timing statically? (as per John Muirs' instructions?)

TIA

Mr hutch,,,,,,,,Yes it is possible to set the timing statically even with the electroinc dizzy on the early air cooled motors, But ideally it should be checked with a good quality timing light (Vac off/ISC valve connected etc etc)

But don't forget to make sure all your vacc hoses are a nice tight fit on all fittings,,,,,,,and finally if standard carbs are fitted try to check to see if the throttle spindles are OK as they do wear and start to draw excess air into the inlet manifold which will weaken the mixture and cause similar symptoms.

thanx fritz... I now have another problem, but I'll post that on a new thread.

do you know if I can replace the 007 with a non vacum advance 009? and what would you recommend?? I'm not interested in performance or building a hot engine, juts fueal economy and the ability to service myself.

Dizzy questions

Ahh the 009 question, it seems the main reason people use this option is either match it to a hot engine or because it is cheaper to replace than the origional 'Doctor Dolittle' (push me, pull you) type dizzy.

You can't really beat the factory way of doing things but I suppose the 009 is the best/cheapest way of trying to help with your problem.

18-22 to the gallon is the best you are gunna see from the old Aircooled engine with perhaps 25mpg on a run, the only way you will make running one of these engines any cheaper is to put on an LPG kit. IMHO.

cheers Fritz...

I am going to replace the 007 (I sheared some of the wires under the rotor cap when removing it !!!) but have managed to get the rotor cap off so I will be able to splice some new wire in there now!!!

I think I will replace the vac hoses while I am there... fitting is ropey! any ideas on where to get this from >?

The 009 has totally the wrong advance curve for a type 4 engine you would be better off returning it to the stock system.
If you have to fit the 009 temporarily, then forget what the manual says about timing and time it to 32-34 deg max advance above 3000 rpm...
The 009 only has about 17 deg advance so timed at 5-7 BTDC will result in retarted ignition and over heated heads...
