First gear selection

Hello all

I have an '89 Auto Sleeper with a 4 speed box. Ever since I bought it (6 months ago) I noticed first gear doesn't always seem to be in the same place. If you select first from neutral, it's sometimes a little stiff and when it does engage, it appears to be 'up and left', almost as if going into reverse - moving away at the lights, sometimes it's difficult to tell if you're in first or reverse until you drop the clutch!

I've just got used to engaging first via second, where it engages easily moving 'straight up'...Is this a gear linkage selector problem I've read about in the archive? It doesn't seem to have got any worse since I've had the van.

Any help much appreciated, thanks :)

Mine was the same. It was in for LPG at Campershack a week ago and they sorted it in a few minutes - just needed adjusting by one spline and now it's sweet as a nut. Not that i know how to do the adjustment mind. Could also be the gearbox oil needs topping up but I'm sure someone more expert than me will be along shortly to point you in the right direction!
