2.0 CU Auto with *very* stiff throttle - Anyone else?

Hi all.
1982 2.0 (CU with twin Solex carbs) Aircooled automatic camper has a really stiff throttle pedal.
The cable snapped the other week(!), so I replaced it, and still a very heavy throttle pedal. So much so the base of the pedal is pulling out of the floor!
Do any other Automatic owners have the same problem? I have a mate with an almost identical manual bus, and the gas pedal is light as a feather.
Do "they all do that, Sir", or is there some experiential wisdom I'm missing out on?! As it goes, the throttle pedal mechanism is going in the bin when I've finished milling up a billet pedal, pushrod and rocker arm assembly - watch this space. "£25 for that silly little underfloor pressed steel rocker bracket?!? You're having a larff, Guvnah..."
Thankyou - this place is already proving to be a goldmine, and I will be contributing by adding my experiences and epiphanies as they occur!
Ed.
P.S. I do like to make things, particularly machined out of billet, so there might be some design development of those parts that seem a little pants, like throttle pedal assemblies, the hopelessly sloppy, rattly throttle actuator shaft that sits between the carbs... That sort of thing. Watch this space over the coming months...
