OK, sprung push rod tubes ordered - £135

Any tips on installing these with engine in situ?

It looks quite easy on paper but there are never exhausts etc in the way.

HELP

I have fitted my pushrod tubes, all appeared to go as planned.

I now have a problem of the tappits not pumping up, even after running for about 40minutes. Also Idle, starting and running are also bad.

Before I take it all apart again is there anything I should be aware of? I need it for bug jam this weekend19/7/12

Have you set the preload on the rockers correctly?

Was the pushrod seated correctly

I didn't touch the settings on the rocker assy. I just remove the 2 nuts and removed the whole assy.
I also didn't gain access to the tappits.
After removing rocker assy, I withdrew poshrods (making sure they go back in the right order), cut the old tubes out, cleaned sealing faces and installed new tubes.
Re-assy was sliding pushrods back in (there appeared to be no location on to the tappits), installed the rocker assy ensuring each rod was held in its cup on the rocker. This was pretty much the instructions that came with the tubes

When you say "running for 40 mins" did you take it for a drive or just run the engine stationary ?
I've found that Tappetts only seem to pump up when driving .

a small drive of a bout a mile. It was running so rough and I killed one battery trying to start it at the garage (I need to check oil on the level as I'm on a slight incline)

It took 40 mins to do a mile?

driven means using it in anger for half an hour.
if they still remain noisy, then it should be discussed further

is the oil new and mineral and 15/40 or 20/50?

Problem is no compression

I'm guessing on releasing pressure that the hydraulic lifters have over expanded.

Suggestions on getting them out or letting the pressure out of the lifters?

did you drop the oil prior to removal of the tubes then?

Sorted!! :ok

after much checking and head scratching useing the greatest minds on T25 in Surrey (Andy McKnight, beetle link for a few).

The problem was that the valve/ cam followers weren't setup before I started and the rocker arm was loose. torquing down the rocker arm, I then reset the valve clearance.

Now she runs better then every - no drips either.

Now I have to do the other side - After the summer :D
