Hello!

I have got an oil radiator from an old Mitsubishi Canter and my idea is to install it on my van... (1.6Td) what do I need to install it? Where do I have to connect it? I have seen in many differents cars pipes from oil radiator are connected to the oil filter support... but is this engine ready to install it or do I need new parts?

Ok I have seen a oil filter support ready to connect the pipes from the oil radiator...

Is it a OME part? anyone knows the reference? Does any VW Turbodiesel has installed from factory an oil cooler?

ive got a 1.6td engine with intercooler here.its from a passat.

I was thinking also install an intercooler... but is the intercooler good for the engine, is good when the engine from 70bhp gets 10bhp or so more? Is good for the engine?

mines not fitted.its difficult to work out where to place the cooler.as it needs to be placed a flow of cool air.if you look on http://www.busman.be/ under parts.they sell larger air scoops that fit on the rear engine airvents.you get a lot more horsepower when using a oil cooler i believe.andy simpson who posts on here.has fitted an watercooled oil cooler on his syncro.

The thing is the engine has an oil cooler installed from factory, this one:

But i was thinking an oil radiator is better, what do you think? The factory oil cooler works when a sensor gets 107ºC and then an electric motor lets the coolant go through the oil cooler...
The difference would be if I install an oil radiator I dont need sensors and electric motors...

Ideas? Suggestions?

I have a watercooled intercooler and a radiator for oil cooler. I fitted an oil rad in front of main rad, with a thermostat that opens at 85 degrees, i have a sandwhich plate between oil filter and housing, i put the standard water one where it belongs in the bin. Even with this the oil temp is still reaching 120 degrees if i go up in the hills with a heavy right foot.

The water intercooler works really well and is ideal for a t25 but they are not cheap, i had mine left over from a previous project.

Hey Andysimpson, can you show me that thermostat? I am trying to imegine your installation but never heard of a thermostat for oil...

And the thing is: Is better to install the oil radiator instead having the original oil cooler? (that one is installed between block and oil filter)

the MkI Golf GTi (petrol) had an "oil radiator" as you describe. Brickyard used to have a description of how it fitted (long gone I think). It wasn't hard to do though IIRC, the main work was in having long enough pipes and mounting it. The join to the oil system is underneath where the oil filter is, like on Andy's and if you get all the bits there were oil temp senders in it.

I am no good with pics. It has four oil pipes connected no1 from oil filter housing, no2 back to oil filter housing, no3 to rad, no4 back from rad. When engine is cold oil flow up pipe 1 and back down no2 without going to cooler, when oil gets to hot its flow down no1, then to rad and then back to engine. When oil cools down enough it stop flow to rad again.

The coolers vw fitted do work but nothing like as well as they could, i did'nt see the point in having 2 coolers to go wrong so i just binned the vw one.[/img]

Ok then, it is like refrigeration system, just the same.

So when cold thermostat closed, and when hot thermostat opened

I will take a look on google images to try to find out more about the oil thermostat.
