Looking at buying a komet vw camper
Which is more economical....a diesel or a petrol / lpg?
Also can petrol be used as well as the lpg if there are no lpg garages around.
Finally can the lpg run other gas appliances on the camper such as the cooker or would we still have to carry a gas bottle

probably LPG will work out cheaper in the long run with a large outlay to get it fitted you need to be covering a fair few miles to make it pay. which diesel though? the 1.6 no turbo is very economical but painfully slow.

I had been thinking of the turbo diesel.........will look at gasure though. I am not too bothered about speed as I intend to tootle along in my own sweet time.....but will there be a very noticeable difference in power?
Will the diesel engine be easier to maintain and last for longer than the petrol or there not really that much difference.

Horse for course, ask 10 people and you will get 10 different answers the diesel petrol debate just can run and run, its probably been discussed quite a few times on the forum to ad nauseum and some people just seem to be derv heads and others petrol heads!
My take after owning both petrol/lpg and diesel is
roughly
petrol: higher top speed, quieter, more but electronics to go wrong (esp on the 2.1)
Diesel: more economical than petrol (on a par with lpg) more low down grunt to get you up hills.

there's lots of mechanical "big stuff" on a diesel like turbo and fuel pump, well serviced and not abused they will just keep going, and even when they are suffering for one reason or another they will get you there just maybe with various clouds of smoke! when they go bad though they really go bad.

Petrols will go wrong at the drop of a hat regardless of how much time and money you throw at them, and will leave you stranded, the various small ancillaries that make them go are often easier to get off and replace so you can take along a box of spares and if you know what's what you can get yourself going again. That said they are a nicer drive, smoother and quieter,

You can't run your interior gas appliances from your main fuel tank, has to be a seperate leisure tank, but you can dual fill.

Personally for me, and i have owned both lpg and diesel T25's is that i would give LPG a miss unless you have room for a big tank. I had a tank, that gave me around 200 miles and i found my only thought when doing long drives was finding LPG. The standard diesels are good, but not as economical as you might hope (but better than the petrols).

It's a no-brainer...LPG is 57p a liter (at my local supplier)

you do the maths

same power
same MPG (slightly less OK)
Dual fuel
Double range

smoooooth and quiet engine

diesel... don't be daft

I saw LPG advertised at 75p a lire which is about half the cost of petrol I think, so you would effectively be doubling your MPG but that would still be around 35 to the gallon which I would expect from any diesel.
