Steroe fitment advice

Hi guys
Need some advice on fitting a new stereo to my 88 panel van.
I have just finished a respray and tidying up the old girl and thought while I was at it I would replace my standard fitment radio/cassette player and fit some speakers rather than just the one in the dash
I have read through the wicki and archives and understand the wiring involved etc, thats not a problem. My question and excuse me if its been asked before and I've missed it is to do with fitting the unit itself into the dash. Will a standard cd/mp3 type modern stereo fit in the opening? From what I am thinking is that it should but it will stick out the front in which case I then need a surround/fascia. Does this sound about right and/or could someone give me some pionters as I realise it must be one of only a few that haven't had it done in the past.
I have been meaning to do it for years but just never got round to it and then with Ipods there wasnt the need.
Any help appreciated to bring me into the present, sound wise
