Thinking of getting a ferry down to northern spain - Bilbao, turning west out ot the port to visit Santiago De Compostela. Looked at a few campsites which appeared closed in October. Is this typical or have i been unlucky in my choices? Planning to drive back up French coast to Caen.
Only an idea but any suggestions to campsites in that part of Spain ( Bilbao - Santiago de Compostela) and sites along eastern french coast would be great

Hi..im planning exactly the same trip in august

We stayed at a place called Lekeitio once, It had a basic campsite cut out in a step terrace style up the mountain next to the sea. The town was great and didnt see many brits I dont think, but that made it better. The campsite reception has a bar that the locals seem to use after 9pm and it was a pound a beer when we were there a couple of years ago.

Jed.....do you think that there are enough options to cruise around that area and drop onto places to stay without pre booking........in august.
We aren't wild campers......-wife thinks we would wake up murdered in our beds...-

We went in August and just dropped in. We did pass quite a few campsites that didn't seem to be rammed so I would think it would be OK. Personally I have never pre booked anywhere but to save any dramas we somtimes ring ahead to open our options the day before. We only ended up in Spain because we were on the west coast of France and we could see the Spanish mountains in the distace and had a moment of imsparation.

I always fancied walking the pilgrimage route (not that I'm particularly religious, it just seemed like a good idea), but my wife said a big NO. I read about it in a book (can't remember which one - David Lodge, perhaps?), but it's a long walk.

It was indeed David Lodge - the book was 'Therapy'.

That corner of Spain doesn't get the best weather even in summer - it wouldn't be my first choice for October, tbh.

We were there in June, and a lot of campsites hadn't opened for the season - so I'm not surprised they're closed in October.

Cheers for the links......surprised to hear that the weather can be change able......not booked the ferry as yet.....but still really fancy it.

I've often taken the ferry to Bilbao/ Santander with the motorbike and headed for my Dad's place near Bordeaux.

October is gonna be a bit hit and miss with campsites so I can't guarantee the following - but surely that's the beauty of a T25?

If the bus is up to it, take a big pass through the Pyrenees - (avoid any big road with a tunnel - it'll be clogged with wagons). Try the NA130 Arrete Pierre St Martin and then stay in the gorgeous alpine village of Lescun. Campsite Camping du Lauzartmore Mougnague 64490 Lescun, France

San Sebastian - beach in the middle of the city/ tapas and endless cheap gin in the Old Town. 'Bungalows' campsite 15 mins out of the city to the west with a good bus service (you'll find it on google maps).

Saint Jean de Luz - gorgeous little harbour, restaurants, cheap gin (there's a theme here). Campsite Elgar Erromardie 64500 Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France

Booked the ferry to Santander, rtn via Bilbao

Spending a few days in the Pico de Europa - maybe a bit of hiking and then move along the coast to Santiago.
Perhaps some wild camping and some campsites.

Hopefully the weather will be kind but if lots of rain, We'll point the van southwards!

be careful of the mad cows when your hiking, they creep up on you

They call it The Green Coast or something because the rainfall is a plenty. The sea is warm though
