Hello, I finally bought my long-awaited 1983 VW T25 Transporter 1.6 diesel and after two weeks the engine died. Not sure why as i'm not mechanically minded, so I am looking for a replacement. The average price on auction sites is around £1000 which I cannot afford and was just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what other engine would be compatible and does it have to be a 1.6? . Many thanks

Hi
When you say died.......do you mean irrepairable.
Who diagnosed it.....
A simple ish alternative that many people favour is an aaz engine.....which is a turbo 1.9 diesel.......which was a common engine in a fair few 90s vw cars.
Its a fairly straight fwd swop and has a bit more grunt......

if yours is not turbo , stick with a 1.6 / 1.7 or 1.9 non turbo diesel from a vw / audi or seat car
turbo version will mean you need to buy lots of bits.

Who has said the engine is knackered? Did it go in a big cloud of smoke? Aircooled or diesel 1600?
Where in Cheshire are you? If your near me I can call for a look at it if need be.
