I have an after-market revcounter fitted to the dash. Its worse than useless. You even need to wind the dial anticlockwise to reset it to 0 before setting off.

Given T3s delight at throwing electromagnetic wobblies, and the rats nest of wiring under my dash, I thought Id check here...... first.

Can I just cut the wires, rip the dial out, blank off the ends and have done with it?

Or do I need to pull the whole wire out from end to end?

There is no reason why you can't cut them and terminate the ends.

I found myself opening the window while driving past a long wall, or past shop windows to listen to the reflected sound and perhaps hear the more subtle 'misses'
The WasserBoxer engine bay noise suppression is excellent.
But the rev counter..... no help what so ever

Despite what my colleague has said a working rev counter is invaluable, having a late (89) van I merely bought a replacement dash pod with a rev counter from Billy numbers and it was plug and play. I prefer to let the rev counter and warning lights tell me when the flame's gone out instead of some botched sports exhaust deafening me all day.

I take your point Ian. I think the one in my WasserB was not-so-good in the first place.

Mr VW put one in my 2.1.If it was not needed.I doubt he would of bothered.

Oh dear...with such quite petrol engines, mounted along way back, buried underneath a sound insulated lid, a matrass, and god knows what else, why on earth would you need a rev counter
For exactly the same reason some models have mechanical rev limiting rotor arms!

Over reving the engine because it is difficult to hear......

I've got a rev counter in my 2.1
I can watch it flick as I turn the ign key, Helps diagnose the intermittent electrical starting problem.
Also lets me know when I have inadvertently put the auto box in 2nd instead of D.
(I have a very loud radio and poor hearing)

OK Martin, Ian and Rob I take your point, but personally I have never needed to look down at the dash to help me decide when to change gear. I reckon, and as you are all experienced drivers, you too will change gear at the "right" time without checking the rev counter each time. It's just instinctive, well for me anyway. If I had a "hot" motor that I used for high performance driving (say a Lotus Twin Cam Escort) then I would use a rev counter. Just imho of course and it would be a boring world if we were all the same. Please note Rob, no big gaps between sentences

Know what? I've come to the conclusion, I just had a useless Rev counter didn't I?
