ok so the story goes like this .

went on holiday to devon from colchester , essex .. approx 630 miles round trip mostly fully ladened ,plus 3 bikes etc etc. it averaged around 25 mpg, and gave no problems what so ever until , maybe 1 mile from home, when it cut out and died .. dead .

rev counter went haywire , and then nothing, i had on occasions noticed the odd bit of bucking , but it alwys went and never ever died .

we went to clacton on sea today and then from there to tiptree in essex and once again , after it had been runing and got hot ( long journey hot ) it died .. same as before.

it always restarts, normally first turn of the key, although when it died 2 miles from home , it took maybe 3/4 goes. like the fuel had gone .

my guess is its ignition related not fuel , as it had half a tank, and then restarted .. also the rev counter must be a tell tale.

any ideas. i see on another thread a faulty ignition amp may do this .

my problem lies here, like most im skint at the mo , ive taken a 12 grand plus pay cut just to keep a job after being made redundant , so i really dont have loads of free readies to throw at it , but i dont mind replacing any faulty parts as prevention is better than cure .

obviously im open to suggestions and help ..if anyones local thats had this im all ears .

to add

performance is always good, it does nt use oil or water and was just treated to a nice service before we went away, bar this ive had no problem with it , other than a dodgy dash connection to the oil pressure sensor

Just a guess, but since the rev counter gets it's signal from the coil, and since this went beserk just prior to the deadness I'd be heading straight in the direction of the coil.

But that's me and I'm not famed for my mechanical knowledge......

Likewise ... far too coincidental for me that.

rev counter going mental could indicate the ignitor pack (ignition amplifier) has failed.. its happened to me...

ANother thing worth swapping out (and cheap) is the rotor arm get a non rev limited one from a beetle... I've seen 2 of these fail when hot.. 1st time took a lot of chasing to find it.. 2nd time.. easy...

In that case I have three suggestions to try... All very valid and along the lines of what I was thinking . Bar the rotor arm. I'll do the rotor arm for a new one , and them aim to Sep out the coil and ign amp ..
