1.9 DG 4 speed wont go into second

Hi any ideas? van is one i am thinking of buying but the bloke says that its a cheap plastic part of the linkage however if its cheap why hasnt he done it? advice greatfully recieved!!!

As it happens the bloke has just told me that the striker plate is loose and after tightening all is good...
