Now then a little question about CV boots.

I noticed while working on Lloydys van a little while back that the 16" CV boots have an extra bubble on them on the thin end and I am sure LHD Robs van had the 14" CV boots with the same extra bubble on.

So whats the deal with that extra bit on the end? Would it give more movement? Would it give a longer life?

Just wondering.

Considering that T3 vans are not the only vehicles to use CV joints of the sizes they do use, would it be possible that the after market manufacturers are just making a more generic boot - one boot fits all type of thing?

ive always assumed they are a kind of buffer against knocking or rubbing against something.

if its what i think you mean its a secondary seal type of thing. check to see if its got a little hole in the buldge. if it has make bloody sure you tie the cv boot inward of this and not at the outer end like you would normally do as it`ll suck water in when wadeing.

like lee says...its like a breather so if you go wading expect water in your boots, more a car thing than a van thing id say

When i first got my van, it had its original boots on. They were the same as the one pictured above and had no tie inward of the breather and they dont now. there is also a ridge on the driveshaft that from memory the cv boot sits on

so..in theory water can get in there then? bit of a oversight maybe by VW or SDP..

I don't doubt that under certain circumstances water could get in. But with such a small hole, i think it would be unlikely, as for water to get in air has to get out. something else to worry about now

Its a small hole yep...but...on jet ski trailers the wheel bearings suffer because when the trailer gets to the slipway and has warm bearings, its reversed into the cold river/sea and the water cools the hub and the air inside contracts and sucks in the water....and thats past the seals!

Those type boots dont have clips on...i think there is a "passage" on the part where a clip "could" go that leads to the bubble, often a bit of grease oozes from these type boot at the hole.

The extra bulge is for smuggling small amounts of crack cocaine in syncro events.

Helps us forget the amounts of money spent on these things...
